Sound
 
[englisch, saʊnd; wörtlich »Klang«], ist in der Rockmusik das zentrale strukturelle und ästhetische Kriterium des Musizierens, meint hier hingegen über die ursprüngliche Bedeutung hinausgehend die Gesamtheit aller die sinnliche Qualität von Musik bestimmenden Faktoren. Diese umfassen sowohl ihre technische Seite, von der Wahl des Instrumentenfabrikats, geeigneter Mikrofone, entsprechender Verstärker und Lautsprechertypen bis hin zum Einsatz diverser Effektgeräte (Effekte), zur klanglichen und technischen Aussteuerung am Mischpult oder zu den Aufnahmevorgängen im Studio; sie umfassen weiter die Interpretation, Spieltechnik, Spielweise, Phrasierung usw., das Arrangement als auch eine Reihe von strukturellen Komponenten der Komposition (z. B. Lautstärke, Harmonik, Stimmführung, charakteristische melodische Floskeln und Wendungen). Die damit verbundene Umwertung der musikalischen Parameter auf ihre klangsinnliche Qualität hin hat ausgehend von der Rockmusik mehr oder weniger auch andere Formen der zeitgenössischen populären Musik erfasst, sodass dann häufig nicht mehr von Stil, sondern stattdessen von Sound gesprochen wird (Motown-Sound, Philly-Sound, Discosound).
